Getting ready for meaningful work

Whether you are exploring employment for the first time, looking for a new opportunity or need additional support in your current workplace, we provide practical assistance tailored to your individual goals and needs. Getting ready for employment involves more than learning how to perform a job. We can help you develop practical workplace and everyday skills, including:

  • Travelling safely and independently to and from work
  • Working effectively as part of a team
  • Communication and workplace behaviour
  • Problem-solving and completing tasks
  • Following workplace routines and instructions
  • Building confidence in real work environments

Support can be provided one-on-one or in a group setting depending on your needs and goals.

Discover your strengths

Find the right job

Understanding what you are good at is an important first step towards finding the right type of work. We can support you to identify your strengths, interests and abilities, explore different types of employment and develop realistic work goals that suit you.

Finding a job that matches your abilities, interests and support needs can make a big difference to your long-term success. We can assist you with exploring suitable employment opportunities, preparing for work and understanding what support or adjustments may help you perform at your best.

If you are already working but want to change jobs or progress your career, we can also support you in taking those next steps.

Support in the workplace

Backup where you need it

Starting a new job or learning new responsibilities can sometimes require additional support. Depending on your needs, employment assistance may include:

  • On-the-job coaching and mentoring
  • Learning and practising workplace tasks
  • Building confidence and independence
  • Developing workplace communication skills
  • Support with establishing routines
  • Assistance with workplace adjustments
  • Personal support while at work where required
Assessments and professional support

The right supports around you

Where appropriate, allied health professionals may provide employment-related assessments, counselling and advice. This can help identify your strengths and any barriers you may experience at work, establish appropriate employment goals, recommend workplace adjustments and develop strategies to support your participation in employment.

Employment skills can also be developed through everyday community participation. Support may help you learn to use public transport, manage money, meet new people, participate in groups and activities, develop new interests and practise working with others. These skills create a strong foundation for greater independence and future employment.

Everyone's employment journey is different. Your goals may involve preparing for your first job, developing new skills, becoming more independent at work, returning to employment or progressing towards a new career. FTA Disability Care can work alongside you to understand your goals and provide personalised support to help you take practical steps towards achieving them.
